A new fauna crossing has been constructed on the Bruce Highway 2km south of El Arish in Far North Queensland.

The Queensland Department of Main Roads and Transport worked closely with the Cassowary Recovery Team as part of the Smiths Gap project to identify ways to reduce the risk of cassowary road strikes. The result is the construction of this new fauna crossing that links known cassowary habitat in the Smiths Gap Cassowary Corridor. Construction started in July 2020 and was completed in March 2024.

This project is fully funded by the Australian Government under the Bruce Highway Overtaking Lane Program. $40.724m.
